At its meeting of 24 and 25 May 2023 and upon application of Joël Mesot, President of ETH Zurich, the ETH Board appointed Dr Hedan Bai (*1993), currently Postdoctoral Researcher at Northwestern University, Illinois, USA, as Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Robotic Materials in the Department of Materials.

Nicholas Spencer (Emeritus Prof. of Surface Science and Technology, D-MATL) has been elected President of the International Tribology Council (ITC). The ITC’s objectives are to enable contact and communication between tribology societies worldwide, as well as encouraging the formation of new national tribology societies.

The Department of Materials is happy to announce that the Board of the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology has appointed André Studart (*1974), currently Accociate Professor, as Full Professor of Complex Materials.

Jacob Israelachvili, Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Honorary Doctor of D-MATL, passed away at his home in California on 20th September 2018 after a lengthy illness.

The journal provides an interdisciplinary forum for publishing papers which advance the fields of (i) polymerization methods, (ii) theory, simulation, and modeling, (iii) understanding of new physical phenomena, (iv) advances in characterization techniques, and (v) harnessing of self-assembly and biological strategies for producing complex multifunctional structures.

Dr. Peter Beltramo, currently a postdoc in the soft materials group, will start in January 2018 as an assistant professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at University of Massachusetts. We wish him all the best in Amherst.

Fifty students from ETH Zurich and other Swiss universities want to revolutionise transport. For a race set up by Elon Musk, they have developed a zero emission capsule that could in future transport people and goods through a vacuum tube at almost the speed of sound. Switzerland is the U23 world champion in the lightweight quadruple sculls. Matthias Fernandez, a student of Materials Sciences, is a member of the winning team. Congratulations!

The annual MaP Graduate Symposium on 22 June 2017 brought together 240 researchers, students and faculty from ETH Zurich, Empa, PSI and IBM Research. Three researchers of our Department have received an award.

The Materials Research Prize for Young Investigators is newly established in order to emphasize the fundamental role young researchers play in advancing materials science, spanning fundamental and applied research. It is endowed by the ETH Department of Materials and will be awarded biannually.
