Researchers from the Laboratory of Soft and Living Materials (Prof. Eric Dufresne) have directly measured how solid surface tension varies with applied strain on soft solids.

The scientists used optical microscopy technique to image the surface deformation of soft silicone gel due to adhesion contacts, through which solid surface stress, or surface tension, can be directly measured. The finding of strain-dependent surface stress directly confirmed the theoretical prediction by Shuttleworth back to 1950s in experiments. The researchers published the study in the scientific journal Nature Communications.
