Additional information

Research area

Carla is interested in soft matter physics, materials science and biology.

Carla studied Nanoscience at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and subsequently completed a Masters degree in Nanomaterials at Utrecht University. In 2017, she joined the Oxford Colloid Group as PhD student under the supervision of Prof. Roel Dullens. During her PhD thesis, she developed a new system of colloidal bananas which allowed to study the effect of curvature in the self-assembly of colloidal liquid crystals. After receiving an ETH Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2021, Carla joined the Soft and Living Laboratory lead by Prof. Eric dufrense, where she established a novel method based on phase separation to shape cm-scale gels with very precise microstructures. In 2024, she was awarded the Ambizione Fellowship and she is currently hosted in the Complex Materials laboratory lead by Prof. Andre Studart. Together with her new independent research team, Carla is exploring the use of soft matter physics in biofabricated materials to produce funtional sustainable materials.

Additional information

Outside of science, Carla has passion for sports, especially athletics, cycling and Karate, in which she has competed at an interantional level, including a first place at the World Cup in Munich in 2015!
