Biography

Indranil Basu obtained his Bachelors from Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee and afterwards pursued Masters from The University of Western Ontario, Canada under Prof. Dr. Jeffrey T Wood. His Masters thesis was investigating the relationship between solidification parameters and porosity development in commercial magnesium castings. The work was in association with industrial partner, Meridian Technologies Inc. His doctoral studies commenced under Prof. Dr. Günter Gottstein in the Institute for Physical Metallurgy and Metal Physics at RWTH Aachen University, where he investigated the physical origins of rare earth element effects on the ductility of Mg alloys, a project funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG). He cleared his doctoral dissertation with distinction, which was later honored by the RWTH Aachen University by the prestiguous Borcher's prize given to top perfomers. Post his doctoral degree, he spent a post-doctoral tenure working at Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials, University of Groningen in the group of Prof. Dr. Jeff Th. M de Hosson. His research in Groningen was associated with the field of mechanical behavior and dislocation dynamics of hcp (Mg,Ti based) and high entropy alloys (dual phase BCC/FCC) for various applications. He was additionally involved in various industrial projects associated with partners viz. Bosch, Phillips, XYcarb Ceramics B.V. and SKF. Since November 2018, he is employed at the Metal Physics and Technology group under Prof. Dr. J.F. Löffler, where he works primarily on physcial metallurgy in lean magnesium alloys and process-structure-property correlations in additive manufacturing of metallic multimaterials.
