Qualification Profile

The goal of the Master’s degree program in Materials Science is to educate students in the area where materials application, i.e. engineering in the narrow sense, and basic research intersect, at the highest level. Materials scientists will learn multiscale approaches to elicit an atomistic understanding of macroscopic material properties. They will learn to apply this understanding creatively and critically to the study of the functions of materials for the public good, with a feeling for the integration possibilities of technologically relevant systems.

1. Subject-specific knowledge and understanding

Holders of a Master’s degree in Materials Science

  • have mastered the scientific foundations and methods of chemistry, physics, computer science and biology as the basis for a multiscale understanding of material properties and their 
interaction in complex systems;
  • possess both comprehensive and comparative specialist knowledge regarding the characteristic properties of the various classes of materials and their potential applications;
  • are able to draw on the knowledge base of scientific and other disciplines to develop, implement and evaluate materials science solutions.

a. Analytical skills


Holders of a Master’s degree in Materials Science

  • possess the analytical skills to infer the composition, handling, arrangement, structure, proper
ties and potential of materials and their interplay;
  • can in a goal-oriented manner plan, securely implement and meaningfully analyse experiments to clarify and solve materials science and technical problems.

b. Developmental skills


Holders of a Master’s degree in Materials Science

  • have an overview of the various principles which govern manufacture of new materials with optimised properties;
  • possess a broad arsenal of knowledge and methods useful in the development of future technologies, and have a sense of the interplay of materials science and technical problems.

3. Personal and social competences 


Holders of a Master’s degree in Materials Science

  • are able to follow current developments in materials science independently and apply them 
constructively in solutions to problems;
  • are able to clearly and persuasively present their own ideas and findings in discussions, talks, 
reports and publications;
  • are able to work cooperatively in international research teams and conduct their own independent scientific work.
