Industrial Internship (Regl. 2023)
For students starting their studies in HS 2023 or after, the industrial internship is a compulsory part of the Master's degree programme in Materials.
The industrial internship must be carried out in a materials science and engineering environment. During the industrial internship the students shall gain insight into
- large-scale manufacturing processes,
- materials properties and characterization in the industrial context,
- materials selection and product design, and/or
- the industrial workplace.
The internship must have a minimum duration of the equivalent of 12 weeks full-time work and can be extended voluntarily. It can be done at any point once 150 ECTS credit points of the Bachelor's degree studies have been obtained and preferably before the start of the Master's thesis.
More details can be found in the Industrial internship guidelines for students at D-MATL, study regulations 2023 (Download German (PDF, 107 KB)/Download English (PDF, 107 KB)).
Students must find their own internship. Internship offers are published on various websites, for example the department's notice board, the website of the student association in materials at ETH Zurich (SMW), on other job platforms (e.g., external page IAESTE. external page ETH get hired) or by the companies directly. An overview of internship objectives is listed in the industrial internship guidelines (Download German (PDF, 107 KB)/Download English (PDF, 107 KB)). If students are uncertain whether an internship fulfils the criteria, they are requested to contact the D-MATL study administration office.
The following list provides an overview of companies that hosted Materials students as interns in the past years: Download List of companies (PDF, 25 KB)
Internships need to be registered with the student administration office using the form Download Registration Industrial Internship MSc 2023 (PDF, 1.2 MB).
Students who have difficulties finding an internship (e.g., repeated unsuccessful applications) should contact the D-MATL Study Administration Office.
Students usually enrol for a leave of absence during their industrial internship. While on leave students remain matriculated but pay no semester fees, except for the compulsory fees. The regular deadlines for the semester enrolment via myStudies apply.
Students must submit a final report to the D-MATL Study Administration Office together with a copy of the job reference letter or employment certificate. The report may be subject to revisions. If all requirements are met, the ECTS credit points are decreed.
Final report
The final report should include the following sections:
- company and industrial sector,
- project and activities (description for a non-specialist reader),
- acquired subject-specific, methodical, social and personal competences,
- personal reflections (for example: Were there surprising or challenging aspects of the internship? Will this internship inform future career-related decisions?).
The report (less than 10 pages) must have a cover page detailing the duration of the internship, place of work and name/e-mail address of direct supervisor. Reports in which passages are blackened for the purpose of nondisclosure are not accepted. If the company has doubts regarding confidentiality, please contact the D-MATL Study Administration Office to discuss how to proceed.
