Materials Day 2025

The Department of Materials at ETH Zurich hosted this year’s Materials Day under the theme “Materials for Energy.” Eight invited speakers gave exciting insights into current research topics related to energy and sustainability to an interested audience of students, professors and other guests from industry and academia in the Audi Max lecture hall.

Topics covered ranged from advanced battery technologies and magnetic materials for the energy transition to solar cells for the Internet of Things and innovative approaches to storing and converting carbon dioxide using sunlight.

Prof. Guosong Hong, Stanford University, California, United States, was awarded the Materials Research Prize for Young Researchers for his outstanding scientific achievements and promising contributions in the field of materials research. His presentation on the technique to make biological tissue transparent amazed the audience.

Prof. Lennart Bergström, Stockholm University, Sweden, was honored with the Staudinger Durrer Prize, the highest award of the Department of Materials, in recognition of his groundbreaking research in the fields of colloid chemistry, the synthesis and assembly of nanoparticles, non-classical crystallization and mesocrystals.
